Looking for a way to test your limits? If you’re staying in a hotel near Santa Monica pier, you can sign up to participate in the Santa Monica Great Urban Race on March 31. The Urban Race is an urban adventure involving 12 clues so that you can discover the city in mentally and physically challenging ways.
2012 brings some new developments to the Urban Races, such as one free beer for 21 and over participants, along with a free t-shirt. The challenges consist of puzzles, riddles, brain teasers, multi-part clues and physical exertions. Teams will consist of 2-4 participants. Families are especially welcome to form their own teams. Each race will highlight one big clue to challenge teams to the max. Participants of the race are encouraged to use your smart phones during the challenges, but don’t expect it to be easy! Urban races are being held all over the U.S., starting in February in Scottsdale, Arizona and ending in San Diego in October.
The first place team gets $300 and free Championship entry; there are also second and third place prizes. Best costume receives a trophy and bragging rights. There is a chance for a $10,000 prize at the National Championships in Las Vegas, as well as sponsor goodies at each event. Around 150 to 700 teams participate in each city every year, so the competition is often intense!
The Santa Monica Race’s headquarters are at Mariasol on the Santa Monica Pier. Teams can pick up their packets from 11am to 11:55am, and the race runs from 12pm to 5pm. You can still buy tickets to race at $60 per person until 11:59pm on Friday, March 31. On Saturday, you can also register for $70 per person.
