There is lots to do when visiting the world famous Santa Monica Pier, however one of the attractions you would be crazy not to visit is Heal the Bay's public Marine Education Center. The center is situated at beach level just below the carousel and boasts 4,500 square feet of different sea life attractions and amusements which will keep you and your family enthralled for hours. The Aquarium has a vision in which it hopes to inspire the 85,000 visitors it receives each year to understand the conservation around Santa Monica Bay and that in doing so, activities that threaten marine life around the world may eventually be stamped out. If you know where to stay in Santa Monica, then you should be close to the aquarium and it is definitely worth the trip over!
In addition to its public session, the aquarium is also available for school field trips, private parties and special events. During these sessions as well as being able to view over 100 species of marine animals and plants in its natural habitat, there are various activities especially for children such as hugging a sea urchin, marine themed scavenger hunts and even a trip to the lab to take a look at some microscopic sea life. As if all this wasn't enough, you will even be able to get up close and personal with some of the marine life in the touch tanks which are situated around the site.
Now, what is a trip to an aquarium without getting to watch feeding time? Feeds take place daily but if you want to get involved, then Tuesdays and Fridays are the times to go, as you will be able to help feed the sea stars. There are also public shark feedings every Sunday afternoon for those who want to learn more about the scariest marine life there is.
The aquarium is open to the public between 2 and 5pm Tuesday to Friday and 12:30 - 5pm on weekends, all other times are reserved for field trips and private events. If you are unsure of anything, then call before you visit to ensure you don't miss out on a fantastic family experience and one that you won't forget in a hurry.
